When it comes to sensual fitness, where you choose to work out can greatly influence your experience. Consider these options for creating an inviting atmosphere:

  1. Set the Stage at Home: Transform your space into a personal sanctuary. Dim the lights, light some candles, or use fairy lights to create a warm ambiance. Play your favorite music that ignites your passion and motivation. This is your space—make it feel special!
  2. Get Outside: Embrace the beauty of nature. Feel the sun on your skin and the breeze in your hair as you engage in movement outdoors. Whether it’s a leisurely walk, a yoga flow in the park, or a fun workout on the beach, nature provides an inspiring backdrop for your sensual fitness journey. And 90% of the time, it’s free.
  3. Hit the Gym: Clock in and ride those high-energy vibes! Engage with the community around you as you get your sweat on. The motivation and camaraderie can amplify your experience, allowing you to push yourself while feeding off the collective energy. Pro Tip: Find a gym or class that fits your vibe. I know I’m exhausted by those sterile spaces, but I’m totally down for a sunset savasana overlooking the park.
  4. Choose a Cool Class: Explore different types of workouts that resonate with you. Whether it’s dance, Pilates, yoga, or martial arts, participating in a new or pattern breaking class can bring a new sense of connection to your body while enjoying the energy of others.

The Birth of Sensual Fitness

For me, sensual fitness was born out of a time when I felt profoundly disconnected from my body, my sensuality, and my enjoyment of life. I had experienced a long chaotic period, which followed the massive trauma of losing a loved one to a tragic death. This heartbreaking event sent me spiraling, and I found myself grappling with the remnants of an unhealthy and abusive relationship. Desperately trying to please everyone around me, I was completely losing myself in the process. I had suspicions of betrayal swirling around me, leaving me confused, stuck, and trapped. At the peak of battling my autoimmune disease, I was struggling to figure out how to cope, how to regulate my body, and how to get myself out of bed every day. It was a dark time, both mentally and physically. While I worked hard to keep a smile on my face, I felt like I was dying inside.

In my desperation to escape the mental and emotional pain I was experiencing, I turned to exercise as a form of therapy. The physical pain I endured during intense workouts seemed more bearable than confronting the reality of my situation. I pushed myself to the limits, believing that if I could just exhaust my body, I could also escape my mind. However, it was this unbalanced approach that made me lose touch with the joy I once found in movement. I was stuck in a cycle of using exercise to mask the turmoil inside, not realizing that this imbalance was further compounding my struggles.

Then, something shifted. I remember vividly when the idea of sensual fitness first emerged. I was flowing through a freestyle Pilates session at home, blasting my favorite song, and suddenly, I felt a powerful connection to my body that I hadn’t experienced before. The way I moved—rotating and opening my hips, breathing deeply—allowed me to connect with myself like never before. I began to feel overwhelmed by sensations flooding back in, feeling a mix of liberation and vulnerability. It was a profound moment, like the lost me was found again. I felt alive and connected again like connecting with an old friend. Like finding home. 

The concept of sensual fitness came to me (not surprising as we unleash so much creative energy when we move) when I thought about how incredible it would be to train in ways that would enhance agility, flexibility, and stamina. These are qualities that can radiate confidence, sexiness, and pleasure, ultimately deepening intimate experiences.It’s not about being explicitly sexual, it’s about extracting the sensuality from this beautiful world, and embodying that sensuality because we have the choice, the power and worthiness to do it. I mean, let’s be honest, isn’t it also a way more fun way to live. It’s not about anyone else either, just your relationship between you and you. 

Sensual fitness goals can include aesthetic aspirations, wanting to feel stronger for more fulfilling experiences in the bedroom (wink wink), becoming more agile to play with your children, or simply grounding yourself to age gracefully and independently. The possibilities are endless. Any movement that brings you joy, that  opens your energy field, that contributes to your overall wellness!

Back to my story

After that transformative workout, I took my shower to another level. I lit a candle, usually reserved for bath time, and hung eucalyptus over my shower head. That was the beginnings of what I now call the “sensual shower.” It was a moment of pure indulgence—awakening my sense of smell with the steam, savoring the soft glow of candlelight, and tuning into the soothing sound of water. I felt luxurious, alive, and so deeply connected to myself, realizing that changing my mindset (my environment, speed, intention) and being aware of the present moment could turn everyday experiences into something truly special. In candlelight, there’s no broken tiles and better hardware, no crying kids, no self deprecation, just me and the moment.

Reconnecting with Your Body

As you embark on your own journey of sensual fitness, remember that it’s about meeting yourself where you are. This journey is not about perfection but rather about exploration, connection, and self-discovery. Allow yourself to experience the joy of movement in whatever form it takes, whether that’s through yoga, Pilates, weight training, or dance or a solo walk in the wild

Embrace the playful aspect of movement—put on your cutest workout set, rock the outfit that makes you feel your best, and don’t hesitate to add a pop of lipstick if that feels sexy and a bit sinful. For me, choosing a beautiful workout set that made me feel feminine and put together was a game-changer; it set the tone for my workouts and helped me break free from my funk. However, I also recognize that some days call for a different vibe—throwing on baggy sweats and a cozy hoodie while blasting Eminem can make you feel like a badass ready to conquer the world. There’s something powerful about going au naturel, too. The French have this down to a science—just you and your body, moving in a way that feels good, forgetting all the frills.

If you are called to invest in beautiful workout accessories that give you that feminine flair while building strength, it only serves to keep you connected to you, because it feels good. Step outside to soak in the sunlight or dim the lights indoors and light some candles to set the mood. Listen to whatever music lights up your soul, and let it guide your movements.You make the plan and you decide what feels good.
